Storage Wars – game idea

I posted an interesting thread about a game idea based on the show Storage Wars on A&E.  In this game players bid on storage units that are being auctioned off after the original owners have defaulted on their rent.  However at the end of the thread I was pointed to a game already designed called Auction Junktion.

While the theme is identical the game play would be somewhat different.  The goal would be the same – to get the most money!

What is different about my version:

1. Potential set collection

2. A reveal where all players get to see some items in the locker

3. Cards that allow for a secret reveal of other items in the locker

4. Secret items that no one sees – these could be of high value or worthless

Right now this is on the back burner – but maybe not for long.

That’s pretty incredible that a game already exists for storage unit auctions. If you’ve ever been to one in real life, you’d probably find that the board game is more exciting than most real auctions.

  2. Hi, I hope I’m not intruding but I’m the creator of Auction Junktion. I’m glad to see that you are also interested in creating your own storage auction game. I’d like to comment on the points you listed.

    1. Potential set collection – In Auction Junktion, there are different characters you can play as and some have set collection abilities and all the characters favor certain types of item over others.

    2. A reveal where all players get to see some items in the locker – While there isn’t a full reveal per se, after a player wins a storage unit, he can then sell his items to the bank and other players. So during the course of the game, all the items will be revealed.

    3. Cards that allow for a secret reveal of other items in the locker – All the players secretly look at some of the items in the storage lockers and at least one character can secretly look at more.

    4. Secret items that no one sees – these could be of high value or worthless – In Auction Junktion, all the items are secretly hidden and you have to decide on how to bid based on the little information you get or by how the other players are bidding. Very similar to betting in poker.

So it seems we are basically on the same track with our games. Perhaps you have some other ideas that I’ve not included. I wish you good luck with your game and if you ever want any input i’d be very happy to help you out. My website is http://www.nightstalkergames.com and my email is nightstalkergames@gmail.com

I did see your game after I had the idea for mine and that is one of the reasons I put the game on hold. I still think it has a place in the market but needs more thought.

    Thanks for you input!

  4. Yeah, I’m always willing to give some input. One thing that I found through playtesting is that you don’t want to add in too many “extra” rules into this type of game. It can easily get bogged down and for this type of game the pace is very important. What has made mine so popular is how quick a new player can jump into a game and get the hang of it. So be sure to find a good balance between having all the features you want and having the game flow move at a fun pace.
